Do You Need A Plumber To Install A Dishwasher In NSW? What The Rules Actually Say

Retailers deliver appliances; they don't always connect them properly. We're regularly called to homes in Shellharbour, Shell Cove, Flinders and Wollongong to fix a dishwasher connected with a hardware-store adaptor that has been weeping into a cabinet floor for months.

The short answer for NSW

Any work that alters, extends or connects to the drinking water supply or the sanitary drainage system is regulated plumbing work under the NSW Plumbing and Drainage Act and AS/NZS 3500, and must be done by a licensed plumber. Gas appliance connection is regulated separately under AS/NZS 5601 and requires a licensed gas fitter, who must issue a Gas Compliance Certificate.

What that means appliance by appliance

• Dishwasher — connecting to a tap and existing waste with a proper dishwasher stop tap and a compliant air-break arrangement is plumbing work. New pipework or a new waste point definitely is.
• Washing machine — connecting to existing taps and a standpipe is normally straightforward, but installing or relocating the taps, standpipe or waste trap is plumbing work.
• Fridge with ice and water — a new drinking-water line to the fridge cavity must be installed in approved materials with an accessible isolation valve. Saddle-clamp taps into copper are not acceptable practice.
• Filtered water taps and instant boiling taps — new supply and often a dedicated waste connection: plumbing work.
• Gas cooktop, oven or gas heater — licensed gas fitter only, with a compliance certificate and leak testing at the end.
• Waste disposal units and vanity fit-offs — connection to sanitary drainage is plumbing work.

Why it matters even when the appliance seems fine

• Appliance manufacturers commonly require installation by a licensed tradesperson; DIY connection can void the warranty on the appliance and on the fitting.
• Home insurance claims for water damage often ask who connected the appliance. An uncertified connection is an easy reason to reduce or decline a claim.
• Cross-connection and backflow risk is real: an incorrect dishwasher waste arrangement can allow dirty water back toward the drinking supply.
• When you sell, an unlicensed alteration to plumbing is a defect a building inspector can flag.

What a compliant dishwasher install actually includes

A dedicated dishwasher stop tap so the appliance can be isolated without turning off the kitchen, an approved hose run with no kinks or crush points behind the cabinet, a correct waste connection with the hose looped high to prevent siphoning from the sink, secure fixing so vibration doesn't chafe the hose, and a pressure and leak test before we leave. We also check the existing flexible hoses under the sink while we're in there — burst flexis are the leading cause of indoor flood claims in Australia.

• Plastic saddle valves and self-piercing adaptors used on copper supply lines.
• Dishwasher waste teed into the sink outlet below the trap, letting sink water flow into the machine.
• No high loop on the waste hose, so grey water siphons back into the dishwasher and it smells.
• Hose run over a sharp cabinet cut-out, wearing through after twelve months of vibration.
• Gas cooktops connected with unrated fittings and no compliance certificate — the one we treat as urgent.
